Ready to crank the engine

It’s about to happen. All the systems related to the engine is coming together, and we’re almost ready to fire it up for the first time in the G5 racecar. We have managed to produce complicated components such as complete self-designed and made exhaust system, and drive wheels for the supercharger. The new car also features a brand new fuelline design with an external fuelpump and a tank made of thin aluminum-sheet.

We’re excited to get it up and running.

It’s racing time, Baltic open here we come!

After a long period of fabrication, it’s finally racing time. This time we’re heading to Sweden. Baltic Open 2011 is arranged by Clear River Racing. It’s an unofficial competition which provide a great opportunity to meet with teams from Scandinavia and Germany. Read more about the event here.

We hope to have a good time, and to gain more racing experience. We will be racing the G3 – that recently has been repaired as we had some trouble with the power-take-out shaft. The shaft broke and left the engine running without the supercharger. We hope the rebuild will work, now that the design is modified for better durability.

The birth of a chassis

Spaceframe chassis, all weldments completed.

All the lasercut pieces has been welded in place, and a complete spaceframe chassis is the result. Through a long process of measuring and constructing weldments jigs – we have accomplished building a fairly accurate construction, with the right mounting points for the engine and suspension joints. Today we finally disconnected the chassis from the weldments jigs, a great milestone.

The team has maneged to complete the designphase of the 5th Unicorn racer. The result is based on experience from both 3rd and 4th generation Unicorn racers. The improvement of the design has mainly been focused on better durability and weight reduction. Among many changes I can revile that we have cut substantial weight, by redesigning drive-train and a different shock-absorber type. Further changes of the chassis design has been necessary to comply with the 2011 rule set, the complete chassis weighs in at 28 kg (estimated).

We have started the fabrication of the new car, and the chassis should soon be assembled. The lasercutting of all the tubes for the space-frame has been done by our sponsor Hosta Industries A/S, which has been a great help. The work continues at a steady pace, and w

e are making good progress.

No official competitions this year…

Regarding to team members Unicorn is a young team. As a result of this, have the design phase taken longer than expected, and the same is expected for the construction phase. Therefore we have chosen not to participate in the official competitions this year.

We are working to have the new car (G5), ready for the middle of august this year.

We are looking forward to the summer 2012, there the car is ready for some racing…

This page presents the formula student team from Aalborg University.

The formula student (or Formula SAE outside europe) competition is a racing / engineering series, which challenge teams of different university students to conceive, design, fabricate and compete with small, formula style, autocross vehicles.

To give the maximum design flexibility, the rules of the series gives very few restrictions on the overall vehicle design. The main part of the rules is intended to issue concerns about safety and explain the different events at the competitions. The latest rules can be found here.

The main design objective for the vehicles in the series is to have a very high performance in terms of acceleration, braking and handling and be sufficiently durable to successfully complete all the events at the competition.

As mentioned above, the competition is subdivided into different events, both static representing the engineering part and dynamic representing the racing (and testing) part.
